Read MoreWhat Social Security lists for Endocrine Disorders
Endocrine Disorders that may qualify for disability benefits are evaluated under Section 9.00 of Social Security’s Listing of Impairments – Adult Listings. This section includes disorders related to the major glands of the endocrine system – the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pancreas.
However, there are no specific Endocrine Disorders that qualify for disability benefits given any specific requirements. Rather, Social Security states they “evaluate impairments that result from endocrine disorders under the listings for other body systems”. For example, heart problems resulting from a Thyroid gland disorder are evaluated under the requirements listed in Section 4.00 for Cardiovascular Disorders.
These are a few of the example disorders listed by Social Security followed by the possible impairments they may cause, and which body system the impairment is evaluated under:
- Pituitary gland disorders – the effects of recurrent dehydration under Section 6.00 – Genitourinary Disorders
- Thyroid gland disorders – cardiac dysfunction under Section 4.00 – Cardiovascular Disorders
- Parathyroid gland disorders – kidney failure under Section 6.00 – Genitourinary Disorders
- Adrenal gland disorders – adrenal-related osteoporosis with fractures under Section 1.00 – Musculoskeletal Disorders
- Pancreatic gland disorders and diabetes mellitus (DM)
- Hyperglycemia
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
