Are you currently working?
Are you making more than $1,470/month? (before taxes)
This amount is set by Social Security. It's what they consider to be "Substantial Gainful Activity" or SGA. It gets adjusted annually for inflation.

If you are still working and earning more than $1,470 per month, which Social Security considers "substantial gainful activity" in 2023, they will automatically deny your claim for Disability Benefits. To get Social Security Disability Benefits, your condition must be expected to prevent gainful employment for a minimum of 12 months.

If you're still working and just exploring your options because your impairment is worsening, give us a call at 866-49-BALIN, or send us a message explaining your situation. Our team can help you determine the likelihood of getting approved for benefits and discuss what your options are for next steps.

You can also use the arrows below to go back a question and change your answer to see your chances of getting Disability Benefits if you were to stop working or reduce your hours and monthly income.

Have you worked 5 out of the last 10 years?
Exception for age 30 and younger, the work requirement is half the years since you turned 21.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is just that - an insurance policy; you have to pay into the policy to use the insurance. Your "insurance policy" is paid through the Social Security Taxes taken out of your paychecks. If you have not worked enough years, or have not worked recently enough, Social Security will not consider you "insured".

If you're 30 or younger, the work requirement is less. View the work requirements by age (opens in a new tab).

Use the arrow button below to go back and change your answer.

You can find out if you've paid enough in Social Security Taxes to be "insured" by creating a MySocialSecurity account on ssa.gov

You may also qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) as it does not have any work requirements. SSI is a needs-based program for people with very limited resources and limited income.

Give us a call at 866-49-BALIN or send us a message explaining your situation and we will help you through this! It is complicated and can feel overwhelming; let us lead the way.

Is your condition "severe"? Does it interfere with your ability to work either physically (ex: walking, gripping) or mentally (ex: remembering, multitasking)?

Social Security Disability benefits, both (SSDI and SSI) are programs for people who have a physical or mental condition severe enough that it prevents them from being able to work. If you feel that this isn't correct, or isn't applicable to your situation, please give us a call to discuss your situation in greater detail at 866-49-BALIN.

Is your impairment expected to last at least 12 consecutive months or result in death?

Social Security Disability benefits, both (SSDI and SSI) are programs for people who are expected to be out of work for a minimum of 12 months. If you feel that this isn't correct, or isn't applicable to your situation, please give us a call to discuss your situation in greater detail at 866-49-BALIN.

For each condition, they describe the exact requirements for automatic approval of disability benefits.

If you're interested, you can look through their list of disabling conditions on ssa.gov to see if your condition is listed. We know it can be overwhelming, so please know that our team will handle all this for you once we have your medical history.

If your condition is on the list, you can read below it to see what medical criteria they require for your condition. Some conditions have brief, straight-forward requirements, but many have long, complex requirements. Again, do not feel obligated to dig through these regulations; we will handle all of that for you!

Is your condition on this list?
Does your condition meet all the requirements described in the SSA listing?
Are you able to return to your Past Relevant Work?
Social Security wants to know if there's another job you've had experience doing in the last 15 years that you could reasonably do now, with your impairment, and earn a monthly wage that is equal or above what they consider "substantial gainful activity".

If you can honestly return to your prior line of work full-time, before missing more than 12 months of work, Social Security will likely deny your request for benefits. Please note, this also means that you would be able to maintain good attendance and be on-task more than 90% of the time, performing the same job you previously performed. If that is NOT the case for you, use the Back arrow and change your answer to "No".

Can you adjust to other work?
Social Security will try to determine if there is another job that you could do full-time (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) with your impairment.

If you have experience doing a different job and would be able to do it full time, with good attendance and be on-task, Social Security will likely deny your request for benefits and recommend adapting to that line of work.
